Project Description
This project focuses on synthesizing metal oxide single crystals as catalyst supports. It aims to develop synthetic protocols, characterize their structure and morphology using XRD and electron microscopy, and evaluate catalytic applications through bimetallic catalyst synthesis. Their thermal stability and coke resistance will be compared with those of catalysts supported on polycrystalline oxides.
About the Researcher

Professor of Chemical Science, Division of Physical Sciences and Engineering
Desired Project Deliverables
The selected intern will (1) Develop a synthetic protocol for metal oxide single crystals. (2) Characterize the structural, morphological, and compositional properties using X-ray diffraction (XRD) and electron microscopy (SEM and TEM). (3) Investigate the catalytic applications by synthesizing bimetallic catalysts and evaluating their thermal stability and coke resistance compared to catalysts supported on polycrystalline metal oxides.
Recommended Student Background
• Strong foundation in chemistry (heterogenous reactions, oxide chemistry).
• Basic knowledge of chemical synthesis
• Preparation of diluted HCl solutions of varying molarities.
• Familiarity with an electronic balance.
